Three prizes of $1,000 each and publication in Sewanee Review are given annually for a single poem or group of poems, a short story, and a creative nonfiction essay. Prize in Translation

A prize of $1,000 and publication in Gulf Coast is given in alternating years for a group of poems or a prose excerpt translated from any language into English. The 2024 prize will be given for a single poem. Submit up to 10 pages of poetry translated into English, a copy of the original text, a brief bio of the author, a synopsis of the work being translated, and proof of permission to translate the work with a $20 entry fee, which includes a subscription to Gulf Coast, by August 31. Oregon Literary Fellowships

Fellowships of $3,500 each are given annually to aid Oregon writers in initiating, developing, or completing literary projects in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. These include one Women Writers Fellowship and one Writer of Color Fellowship. In addition, two Oregon Literary Career Fellowships of $10,000 each are awarded to writers who demonstrate exceptional talent; one of these two fellowships is specifically reserved for a writer of color. Using only the online submission system, submit up to 15 pages of poetry or 25 pages of prose (with an artist’s statement and an impact statement for those applying for Oregon Literary Career Fellowships) by August 9. Nobel Prize Interview With Jon Fosse

Lilly Dancyger: First Love

MacDowell

MacDowell offers residencies of up to six weeks year-round to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators on 450 wooded acres near Mt. Monadnock in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Residents are provided with a private studio and work space, as well as access to the James Baldwin Library. Stipends and travel reimbursement grants are available based on financial need. For residencies from September 2025 through February 2026, submit 6 to 10 poems (totaling no more than 15 pages) or 15 to 20 pages of prose and a project proposal with a $30 application fee by February 10.

Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference

The Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference, sponsored by the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University (ASU), was held from October 10 to October 12 at the Memorial Union community center on the university’s campus in Tempe, Arizona. The theme for the 2024 conference was “Craft. Culture. Community.” Programming included craft talks, classes, generative workshops, panels, readings, and events focused on the business of writing for poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators.

Taleamor Park

Taleamor Park offers two- to four-week residencies from April to September to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers on a working grain farm and nature preserve with walking paths in northwestern Indiana between the towns of La Porte and Rolling Prairie, near Lake Michigan and Chicago. Residents are provided with a private room in a restored 1854 brick Italianate house, work space, and a shared kitchen and bathroom. Residents have access to Taleamor’s library and the La Porte County Public Library.

Storyknife Writers Retreat

Storyknife offers two- to four-week residencies from April to October to women poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers on ten acres of wilderness overlooking the Aleutian Range outside of Homer, Alaska. Each resident is provided with meals and a private cabin equipped with a bathroom and a living room that includes a desk and work space. Residents are responsible for their own travel expenses; travel cost stipends may be requested via the application form. To apply, writers submitted up to 10 pages of poetry or prose with a $40 application fee by August 31.
