Willapa Bay AiR offers monthlong residencies from April through October to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers on 16 wooded acres near Oysterville, Washington. Residents are provided with a private cottage with living and work space, a bathroom, and all meals. The residency is free to attend. Celia and Wally Gilbert Artist-in-Residence Program

The Celia and Wally Gilbert Artist-in-Residence Program offers residencies of one to three weeks year-round to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers looking to “explore the scientific process and interact with international scientific staff and visitors” at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) on the wooded north shore of Long Island, New York. Residents are provided with a dorm room, a private bathroom, all meals, and a $1,000 to $1,500 stipend, depending on availability and the length of the stay.

UCLA Extension Writers Studio

The Writers Studio, sponsored by the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, was held from August 1 to August 4 on the UCLA campus in Los Angeles. The conference featured workshops in fiction and creative nonfiction as well as a literary agent search preparatory course led by former literary agent Eve Porinchak. Workshop instructors included fiction writers Lesley Hyatt and Wally Rudolph and nonfiction writers Shawna Kenney and Sehba Sarwar. The cost of the conference was $985. Under the Volcano Master Classes and Guided Residency

The 22nd annual Under the Volcano Master Classes and Guided Residency will be held from January 10, 2025, to January 25, 2025, in Tepoztlán, Mexico, a village located one hour south of Mexico City. The program features master classes in poetry and fiction, as well as individual meetings with instructors, weekly open mics, readings, and conversations with guest writers and scientists. Classes in all genres are offered both in Spanish and English. The faculty includes poets Cyrus Cassells and Aracelis Girmay and fiction writers Jennifer Clement, Tommy Orange, and Ayşegül Savaş.

Guanajuato Writing Retreat

The Guanajuato Writing Retreat was held from September 22 to September 29 at the Florecer Casitas in Guanajuato, the hilly capital city of Guanajuato state, in Mexico’s high plateau region. The theme for the 2024 retreat was “Renewing Ourselves.” Programming (limited to eight writers) included workshops, a reading with local writers, guided exploratory writing sessions led by poet Bonnie Wolkenstein, local excursions to destinations including La Cañada de la Virgen, and independent time to write for poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators.

Willamette Writers Conference

The 2024 Willamette Writers Conference was held online and in person at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Downtown Portland from July 31 to August 4. The conference featured workshops, keynotes, panels, pitch sessions, and critiques for poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers. Concord Free Public Library Writer-in-Residence Program

The Concord Free Public Library Writer-in-Residence Program offers a six-month residency from January to June to a poet, fiction writer, or creative nonfiction writer at the historic Concord Free Public Library (CFPL) in Concord, Massachusetts. Arteles Creative Center

The Arteles Creative Center’s Silence Awareness Existence Residency Program offers one-month residencies to poets, fiction writers, nonfiction writers, and translators from January to March in the countryside region of Hämeenkyrö, Finland. Each resident is provided with a private bedroom and working desk as well as access to shared kitchens, bathrooms, and studio spaces in two residency buildings. Vashon Artist Residency

The Vashon Artist Residency offers two- and four-week residencies from January to November to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators on Vashon Island, a 20-minute ferry ride from Seattle. Residents are provided with a private room, a bathroom, and a shared kitchen, as well as access to a shared studio. Residents are responsible for travel and meal costs. The cost of the residency is determined on a sliding scale based on financial need; the full price is $1,875 for four weeks and $1,125 for two weeks.
